The Top 10 Dog Breeds Around the World (based on Kennel Club rankings)

Ok, so we all know that our own dog is the best dog, but which dog breeds are the most popular around the world?
It’s no secret that dogs are cherished companions all over the world, but which breeds truly top the charts across the globe? In this article, I’ve pulled out the Top 10 Most Popular Dog Breeds in the World, based on the latest registration data from major international kennel clubs, including the American Kennel Club (AKC), the UK’s Kennel Club, and the global Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI).
Rather than focusing on a single country, I’ve taken a “best average” approach – looking across multiple rankings to see which breeds are loved not just in one corner of the world, but nearly everywhere. Some of these pups are well-known family favourites, others are surprise entries thanks to recent trends.
And of course, as you read about each breed, I’ve included links to original dog wall art and prints from our shop DrawingTheDog.com – the perfect way to celebrate your favourite dog.
So let’s have a look at the dog breeds the world simply can’t get enough of…
1. French Bulldog
The mighty Frenchie takes the crown! With its bat-like ears, snub nose, and compact muscular build, the French Bulldog has surged to the top of popularity rankings in the United States and is gaining ground worldwide. These little charmers are ideal city dogs – they don’t need a huge garden and are quite happy snoozing on the sofa or pottering about the house.
But don’t let their chilled-out nature fool you – Frenchies are full of personality. They love company, thrive on attention, and will have you in stitches with their quirky antics. Their expressive faces (and often snoring snoozes) are hard to resist.
Because of their flat faces, Frenchies can struggle in hot weather and may need extra care with breathing and exercise. Still, they’re incredibly loyal and affectionate companions, particularly suited to singles, couples, and families alike. It’s no wonder their popularity has exploded globally.
2. Labrador Retriever
Ah, the trusty Labrador. For years, the Lab has reigned supreme as the world’s favourite breed, and it’s still right near the top. Labradors are adored for their gentle nature, eagerness to please, and boundless energy. They’re the ultimate all-rounder: great with kids, brilliant guide and assistance dogs, and always up for a swim or a game of fetch. The first dog I ever met, when I was a tiny tot, was our next-door neighbour’s dog – a lab called Goldie.
Labs are incredibly friendly, often thinking every stranger is a potential new best friend. They’re easy to train (thanks to their love of food), and their even temperament makes them ideal family pets.
They do need plenty of exercise, though, and can easily pack on the pounds if you’re not careful with treats. Their loyalty, intelligence and lovable personalities have earned them a permanent place in homes around the globe, and rightly so.
3. Golden Retriever
Golden Retrievers are the soft-hearted sweethearts of the dog world. With their silky coats, intelligent eyes and trademark smile, it’s easy to see why they’re one of the most beloved breeds globally. These dogs are known for their gentle, loving, and loyal temperament – they’re the ultimate family companion.
They’re particularly great with children, eager to please, and always up for a walk, a cuddle, or a play session. They thrive on human companionship and are just as happy bounding through fields as they are curled up by the fire.
Goldens are also highly trainable, which makes them excellent therapy and service dogs. They do shed, and require regular grooming, but most owners agree it’s a small price to pay for such a good-natured friend. If you’re looking for a breed that wears its heart on its furry sleeve, the Golden is hard to beat.
4. German Shepherd
Powerful, intelligent, and fiercely loyal, the German Shepherd is much more than just a working dog. These dogs are popular all over the world for their confidence, trainability, and courage. Originally bred for herding sheep in Germany, they’re now staples in police and military forces, but also make deeply devoted family pets.
They’re incredibly smart and need regular mental stimulation, whether it’s training exercises, agility work, or puzzle toys. They can be protective of their family, which makes them excellent watchdogs, but socialisation from an early age is key to ensuring a balanced temperament.
German Shepherds are happiest when they have a job to do, whether it’s guarding the house, carrying a toy around, or learning new tricks. Their devotion to their people is unmatched, and their dignified presence adds a special kind of gravitas to any home.
5. Poodle
The Poodle is much more than its posh haircut suggests. These curly-coated canines are among the most intelligent breeds in the world and come in three sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Their versatility and brains make them ideal companions, performers, and even water retrievers (yes, they were originally bred as hunting dogs!).
One of the biggest draws of the Poodle is their low-shedding coat, which makes them a popular choice for allergy sufferers, although they do need regular grooming to keep those curls under control. They’re lively, elegant, and surprisingly cheeky.
Poodles excel in obedience, agility, and other dog sports. They’re brilliant with children, quick to learn, and often have a playful, almost clown-like charm. Whether you fancy a dignified Standard or a spirited Toy Poodle, this breed continues to charm its way into homes across the globe.
6. Dachshund
With their sausage-shaped bodies and big personalities, Dachshunds are one of the most recognisable and lovable dog breeds. Originally bred for hunting badgers, these little dogs are brave, sometimes stubborn, but endlessly entertaining.
Dachshunds are clever, curious, and a bit cheeky. They form strong bonds with their people and are surprisingly good watchdogs, often alerting you (and the neighbours) to every noise. While they can be a tad independent, they respond well to positive reinforcement and consistency.
There are three coat types: smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired, and two sizes: standard and miniature. Regardless of their look, every Dachsie has a big heart and an even bigger personality. Their popularity continues to grow, particularly with city dwellers who want a compact dog with a giant spirit.
7. Beagles
Beagles are the curious explorers of the dog world. With their merry personalities, soulful eyes, and powerful noses, these hounds are a favourite in many countries. They’re especially beloved by families thanks to their friendly, curious, and merry disposition.
Originally bred for hunting in packs, Beagles are incredibly social; they don’t like to be alone for long and are happiest when part of a family unit. Their noses often get them into trouble, as they’ll follow a scent just about anywhere, so a secure garden is a must!
They’re also fairly vocal (they do love a good bay) and need regular exercise to stay out of mischief. But for all their stubbornness, Beagles are affectionate, energetic, and always up for an adventure.
8. English Bulldog
English Bulldogs might look gruff with their wrinkled faces and stocky build, but they’re softies at heart. Known for their calm, courageous, and kind nature, Bulldogs are beloved for their loyalty and relaxed attitude toward life.
They’re not overly energetic, which makes them great for apartment dwellers or those who prefer a shorter stroll to a long hike. Bulldogs love their naps, food, and cuddles, in that order, and make brilliant companions for laid-back households.
Because of their unique build, they can be prone to breathing issues and need protection from extreme temperatures. But with the right care, Bulldogs are affectionate, charming and deeply attached to their people. Their droopy faces and slow waddles have captured hearts all over the world.
9. Rottweiler
Rottweilers are one of the most misunderstood breeds, often seen as intimidating, but in truth they’re incredibly loyal, calm, and confident dogs when raised with love and training. Originally Roman cattle drovers, these strong working dogs are intelligent, protective, and deeply bonded with their families.
They require early socialisation and firm, positive training, and they’ll reward you with devotion and gentleness. Rottweilers are known for being playful with their loved ones and often goofy once you get past their tough exterior.
They do need physical and mental stimulation to keep them happy, so they’re best for experienced owners who can give them structure. With the right guidance, a Rottie is a loyal shadow who will follow you to the ends of the earth.
10. German Shorthaired Pointer
Rounding off the list is the versatile and high-energy German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP). These athletic dogs are prized for their intelligence, stamina, and affectionate nature. Originally bred for hunting both land and water game, they’re now adored for their boundless enthusiasm and sleek good looks.
GSPs need loads of exercise, we’re talking long walks, runs, and off-lead play whenever possible. They thrive on activity and get bored quickly, so they’re ideal for outdoorsy families or active individuals. They’re also great with kids and get along well with other dogs if socialised early.
Their affectionate, people-oriented nature makes them fantastic companions, and their love of life is utterly infectious. Just be ready for muddy paws and endless games of fetch!
